  1.    CHICAGO - June 3, 1993 - Microsoft Corporation today announced the
  2. future availability of four new simulation products from the entertainment
  3. product unit: the much-anticipated Microsoft* Flight Simulator* version 5.0
  4. for the IBM* PC and compatible computers; two scenery enhancement products,
  5. Microsoft New York and Microsoft Paris, for use with Microsoft Flight
  6. Simulator 5.0; and Microsoft Space Simulator, the ultimate in spaceflight
  7. and exploration.  With the new version of Flight Simulator, the best-
  8. selling flight simulation software of all time, users can experience a
  9. new standard of graphically realistic flight adventure from their desktops
  10. Microsoft New York and Microsoft Paris offer users the chance to experience
  11. graphically vivid and geographically correct simulations of these famous
  12. cities from above.  Microsoft Space Simulator provides users an entertaining
  13. and educational means for exploring the universe with their personal computers.

  15. Enhanced Flight Experience
  16.      "Our product announcements today illustrate Microsoft's long-term
  17. commitment to the entertainment category," said Susan Boeschen, vice
  18. president of the consumer division at Microsoft.  "Microsoft Flight Simulator
  19. is a proven success, and version 5.0 enhances this timeless classic and
  20. carries on the heritage of unmatched realism in PC flight simulation,
  21. offering users countless hours of fun and providing expert pilots challenging
  22. situations as well as great scenery and engaging entertainment value for all
  23. skill levels."
  24.      Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 offers an all-around high-quality flight
  25. experience, from the richness of the realistic graphic scenery to the
  26. authentic look and sound of the cockpit and dials on the control panel.  The
  27. flight environment and wide range of choices for flying activities have been
  28. expanded to include worldwide travel capabilities, with appropriate scenery
  29. and time-of-day changes as users wing their way over continents and oceans.
  30. Other new features include the following:

  32.    *  New latitude and longitude system that helps users locate destinations
  33.       and current location in flight
  34.    *  "Land Me" feature, which helps inexperienced pilots complete flights
  35.       successfully (without crashing) while observing the basics of landing
  36.       an aircraft
  37.    *  Realistic sound effects for instrument use, approaching objects and
  38.       crashes
  39.    *  Scenery that expands in detail as the aircraft approaches specific
  40.       areas of interest
  41.    *  New weather system feature that gives users control over the weather
  42.       they will encounter in flight

  44.       Users may choose to encounter other air traffic while in flight and be
  45. visited by the airport fuel truck upon landing after a long flight.  Night
  46. approaches are also realistic with runway lighting, building lights and stars
  47. illuminating the night sky.

  49. Flight Simulation Users Excited About New Version
  50.         Users of Microsoft Flight Simulator are anticipating version 5.0 as a
  51. completely new generation of flight experiences.  "Microwings members saw a
  52. technology demonstration of Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 several months ago
  53. but did not know it was the actual product.  The audience was transfixed by
  54. the vastly superior graphics and capabilities of the product on the screen,"
  55. said Robert MacKay, president of Microwings, Inc., an international
  56. association for aerospace simulation enthusiasts.  "Microsoft Flight
  57. Simulator has always been respected as a great game, but version 5.0 goes
  58. beyond existing gaming standards and we believe it looks as good or better
  59. than the graphics you see in a $250,000 flight simulation machine.  Flight
  60. Simulator 5.0 will make pilots take a second look at PC flight simulation;
  61. `stunning' is the only word to describe this product."

  63. New Scenery Packs Available
  64.         Microsoft also announced today two new companion scenery packs for use
  65. with Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0.  Available later this summer, Microsoft
  66. Paris and Microsoft New York offer vivid graphic realism to further enhance
  67. the flight experience.  Pilots will be able to fly by the Eiffel tower while
  68. visiting Paris and take an aerial tour of the Statue of Liberty in New York
  69. Harbor on the opposite side of the Atlantic.  Used in conjunction with
  70. Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0, the scenery packs offer aviation enthusiasts
  71. truly realistic geographic adventure using the personal computer.

  73. Space Simulator Previewed Today
  74.         Rounding out today's announcements was a sneak preview of Microsoft's
  75. newest simulation product, Microsoft Space Simulator.  Users will be able to
  76. satisfy their desire to fly to other worlds and explore our galaxy with this
  77. true-to-life tool for space exploration.
  78.         In order to achieve authentic space simulation, Microsoft consulted a
  79. variety of sources in the development of Microsoft Space Simulator.  Making
  80. use of published geological and astronomical documents and data gathered from
  81. the Voyager, Magellan, Viking and Mariner space flights, Microsoft also
  82. sought input from NASA.  The end result is an entertaining and educational
  83. product with outstanding photo-realistic graphics, different ways to navigate
  84. and experience space and a vast array of planets and other heavenly objects
